What Causes Stiffness In The Neck?

Yes, hopefully. I am a 73 year old woman, general for my age is good, HBP, high cholesterol, low thyroid. My question is a stiff neck that has been going on for a few weeks now, I had many x-rays, and an MRI, both show arthritis throughout my body, but I don t believe, my neck is related to that as the pain comes only when I turn my head right to left and vice versa, the pain starts at top on my spine and the muscles in my neck, no over the counter pills makes any difference.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

As you said you feel pain with moving head right to left and vice versa. Does it also happen with moving head forward and backward? Have you done X-ray cervical spine? In such a case, my first thinking will go for cervical spondylosis which presents like this as you said and can be diagnosed with X-ray cervical spine both lateral and anteroposterior view. And it can be treated by applying cervical collar for sometime. Pain killers may give you a little bit of relieve.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Imran Zeb
