What Causes Spotting During Pregnancy?

I recently found out I was pregnant. I had a scan done which showed gestation, a sac and a yolk. They estimated I was five weeks. They told me that it is low lying really close to my cervix. I have today started bleeding. Not a great loss on my pad but enough when I wipe. Does this indicate a miscarriage or can this be because of the positioning of the baby?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello, greetings! Thank you for posting your query. It is common to have mild spotting during initial stages in pregnancy. This maybe due to hormonal changes or when your fertilized egg is getting embedded in the uterus lining, called implantation bleeding.
It is unlikely to be a miscarraige as usually a miscarraige is accompanied with abdominal cramping and loss of a larger quantity of blood/clots.
Nevertheless, I would recommend you to consult your gynaecologist if, in case the bleeding persists or you experience abdominal cramps/pain.
Wishing you good health.
