What Causes Speech Disorder While On Levoquin?

My dad is being treated for pneumonia with Levoquin. He has just one dose left tomorrow however, we noticed yesterday that he started with garbled speech. Could this be a side effect from the medication or should we be concerned of a possible TIA? He doesn t seem to have any other signs of a TIA and states he is feeling better when questioned. He also is taking Mucinex twice a day however didn t think that would cause speech impairment? Thank you!! Valarie Frankart

Hello welcome to 'Ask A Doctor' service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advise.

It is not a known side effect of Levoquin so it is would be best for him to be seen to find the cause. TIA is one cause but in some persons with infection, an electrolyte disturbance can occur that may cause temporary confusion. His doctor would be able to assess him and find the cause.

Hope I have answered your question.
