What Causes Sound That Is Not Due To Any External Stimulus?

Periodically, since I was a child, I have heard a sound that is not caused by any external stimulus. It comes without pain or alarm. It sounds, as I always think to myself, as if my brain were tuning itself, for a few seconds. Assuming this phenomenon is common, what is this called and what causes it?

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have symptoms of sound that is not due to external stimulas which seems to be due to accumulation of ear fluids, ear wax and ear infection leading to ringing sounds in ear known as Tinnitus. Need not to worry. Visit ENT specialist once and get it examined and start treatment after thorough examination. You should get audimetery testing as well to check extent of infection. You should get otoscopic examination done. Take proper course of antibiotics such as Levofloxacin along with antiinflammatory medication such as Levocetrizine. You should maintain complete oral hygiene. Do warm saline gargles. Put otogesic ear drops.

Hope your concern has been resolved.
