General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

If redness and pain with out any injury or repetitive stress then it can be most likely a gout attack. Uric acid level in blood should be checked. Taking NSAIDs like Ibuprofen (Motrin) will be helpful. This is available as over the counter. If not improving consult your GP.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
