What Causes Sore Throat, fever And Body Pain?

I came down with a bad fever 4 days ago, coupled with a severe sore throat and horrible muscle pains all over my body, and the fever broke, but the sore throat won t go away. The Aches are coming and going now. My lungs and breathing are fine, but I haven t been able to eat in 3 days, and I can barely tolerate taking a drink the size of a bottle cap. I thought I might have strep, but nobody else has gotten sick, and I have been around a ton of different people, leading me to believe there may be something seriously worse going on. Urgent Care won t even see me, and I am very concerned. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi. It seems like you have a bad case of acute pharyngitis. It may be viral because of the muscle pains but it doesn't rule out a strep infection too due to the high fever and severe throat pain. It can also be a combination of both.

It is not necessary that other people you have been in contact with have a strep infection too. The infection depends greatly on individual immunity which differs from person to person.

What you need is a good course of antibiotics, anti-inflammatory medications and oral antiseptic rinses. You also need to keep yourself hydrated adequately by drinking 1.5 -2 litres of water everyday (will hurt initially but will ease swallowing slowly) and eat soft bland food.

You will need to see your primary physician or an ENT specialist to evaluate your throat and carry out blood work (ASO and monospot) before initiating you on treatment.

You will recover within a day or two of the medications since most throat infections, regardless of however severe they may be, lead to very good recovery. It is just the matter of time and use of the right medications.
