What Causes Slurred Speech While Taking Zyrtec?

As of Thursday I started giving my son, 18, Zyrtec, generic, He has been stumbling and his speech is not normal. Yesterday, Sunday, he had a one vehicle wreck, he was cleared by the ER personnel with no serious injury. He is not a substance or alcohol user. Could these effects be caused by Zyrtec. He took it 3 days in a row.

Hi,
I understand quite well your concern.
Zyrtec is an antihistamine that treats symptoms, such as itching, runny nose, watery eyes, and sneezing from hay fever and other allergie. Some side effects of this medication include: drowsiness, fatigue, dizziness, dry mouth, sore throat, headache etc.
But, some patients reported the occurrence of sleepiness, or somnolence when taking this antihistaminic.
So, please tell to your son not to drive a car while taking this medication.
It's better to take it before he sleeps or to change it with another antihistaminic which does not cause sleepiness.

Hope this is helpful to you
