What Causes Sleeplessness After Using Phenelzine Antidepressant?

I was taking Tapentadol 2000 msg day and was given Phenalzine antidepressant. This resulted in me collapsing sleeping about 18 hours out of 24 and hospitalisation for 6 weeks. I have since found out I should not have been taking Tapentadol at the same time as an MAOI. Is this correct?

Yes you are correct. You shouldn't be taking tapentadol when you are beginning phenelzine. Phenelzine being a mono amine oxidase inhibitor has significant drug interaction with tapentadol. In most of the cases, a minimum of 14 days drug free gap is provided in between while mono amine oxidase inhibitor like phenelzine has to be introduced. I would suggest to take such medications only under physician guidance and as instructed.
