What Causes Signs Of Hypothyroidism While On Cytomel For Thyroid Cancer?

Hello. This is a question about radioactive iodine treatment for thyroid cancer. My treatment is set for Feb 24. I start a low iodine treatment today (Feb 17). I ve been taking Cytomel 25mcg from January 19 to Feb 9 2016. I have not been very disciplined with the Cytomel though... So here s the case: - I was supposed to stop Cytomel on Feb 9, but between Feb 9 and Feb 15 I probably took about 5 pills - I only took 20 pills between Jan 19 and Feb 9 (instead of of 42) (This is based on the fact I have 17 pills out of 42 still in the container) - The most noticeable signs of hypothyroidism I have now are very dry skin and lips, thinning hair, and memory problems (clearly) SO: Am I ok to go ahead with the iodine treatment (ie: will it still be effective)?

HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

You would need to have your thyroid level tests to determine if you are hypothyroid.

If your levels are low then your doctor would opt to hold off the iodine treatment but if they are still elevated then you would need to iodine to help normalize the readings.

I hope this helps
