What Causes Shortness Of Breath Despite Having Pulmonary Edema?

My lungs specialist said I have some water in my lungs and that is the reason of my short breath !!! He is undecided to treat me with more LASIX or send me to the hospital and pump some water out of my lungs ??? What should I insist on ??? I am 91 years old and had 9 years ago open heart surgery and replaced two valves, Up to month ago I did not feel short of breath. I appreciate your advice. C.Barsic

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Since you have undergone open heart surgery and replacement of 2 valves 9 years ago and now you are 91 years old, it is possible that the heart is not working properly, this gives water retention occurs.
Hence I would advise you the following:
First of all consult your Cardiologist and Cardiac Surgeon for proper clinical examination and investigations.
Echocardiography and other investigations to know how much is the heart working.
X-ray chest or CT scan help to know how much water is retained in lungs causing breathlessness.
Hence the management may include medicines to boost the heart output which in turn may help further to reduce water in lungs and body.
Additional management as per the opinion of a Pulmonologist.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
