What Causes Shortness Of Breath Along With Palpitations?

My blood pressure is 167/97. I have problems with shortness of breath, even when I am just relaxing. My heart races and sometimes my body will stiffen and I can t breathe at all. These episodes HAPPEN several times a day and last for about 40 to 50 seconds. What is happening and how concerned should I be? I am a 59 year old female of normal weight.

I can understand your concern.
Your blood pressure reading (167/97) is very high .
So we should first rule out heart diseases (arrhythmia) for your symptoms.
So get done blood pressure monitoring, ecg, 2d echo, stress test and Holter monitoring (24 hours continuous recording of Ecg).
If blood pressure reading is high you will need antihypertensive drug to control blood pressure.
If other reports are normal then possibility of stress and anxiety related palpitations is more likely.
So avoid stress and tension, be relax and calm.
Consult psychiatrist for counseling sessions and anxiolytic drugs (propranolol and flunarizine).
Don't worry, you will be alright with all these.
