Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Short-term Memory While Suffering From Bipolar Disease?
I am 57, female, and treated for bipolar for 24 years. I hold a Master s degree and completed a 30 year career in education. I reported to my psychiatrist that I was experiencing short-term memory problems over a year ago. My MRI did not show any cerebral volume loss, though the MMSE showed what he considered to be soft signs of MCI. My current MRI (one year later) indicates that I have mild generalized cerebral volume loss. What is your opinion?
There are several causes of short term memory loss. Sometimes stress and overload can contribute and sometimes medications may as well. I would recommend you to have a TSH and FT4 test done to rule out some problems with the thyroid as it may affect the brain and cause symptoms similar to dementia in elderly. Dementia is a possible cause but generally the patient is not aware of the problem in dementia as it is happening with you.
If the tests come out normal then I would talk with the doctor on the chance of medications affecting your memory or otherwise an overload and stress might be a possible cause.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Antoneta Zotaj General & Family Physician
