What Causes Severe Swelling In Legs?

I saw my 53 year old sister recently. She had put on weight, but the most amazing and disheartening thing I saw were the size her legs had become.....so large that they looked somewhat deformed. She was an alcoholic in the past. I am concerned that there could be problems with one or more of her vital organs. Could you provide me some insight into this type of thing?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,
Welcome to the HCM.
Since most commonly heavy legs because of heavy weight can occur due to varicose veins. It is actualy accumulation of fluid in legs due to abnormaly working veins valves in legs and legs does not pump up the blood properly.
I would suggest get doppler ultrasound of legs done and discuss with the vascular surgeon.
Regards,
Dr.Maheshwari
