What Causes Severe Stomach Pains?

My 15 year old son is waking at night with severe stomach pains. He takes dicyclomine (sp?) but it doesn t seem to help. The pain most always occurs anytime after 2am and he does get relief until sometimes noon. His gastronologist says he has IBS. The pain gets so bad at times that he says it hurts to touch his stomach. Should his gallbladder be checked? Does IBS pain really get that severe?

Hi,
Welcome to health care magic,

Yes,this could be irritable bowel syndrome or stomach hypermotility.

His gall bladder can be checked on abdominal ultrasonography and liver function tests.

Morever,he should undergo routine blood investigations with urine and stool examination for R/M and ova or upper GI scopy if required.

If he takes light food daily and still having raised frequency of bowel habit with abdominal bloating or distension then he should start some medication like proton pump inhibitors(pantoprazole or rabeprazole),avoid excess carbohydrates and fatty foods, avoid oily and spicy foods.

If he still have these problems then u should go for follow-up treato at gastroenterologist to detect the underlying cause.

Thanks and Regards,
