What Causes Severe Sinus Congestion Despite Taking Antibiotics?

My daughter, 19, has severe sinus congestion that will not go away. We ve tried antibiotics periodically in the past but to no avail. She, at times, passes out or nearly so due to lack of oxygen (I think). What do you suggest as a next step we take to resolve this issue. Could it be food allergy contributions or other things. She does have periodic seasonal allergies. Thanks

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Nasal congestion is really a tough to treat especially if a person is allergic as in case of your daughter.

Now, first, we should examine her ENT tract especial nasal cavity to rule out any polyp that might contribute to congestion.

Next, should keep her nasal cavities well clean, use always saline nasal spray to keep them clean and open.
Apply vapour rub on the chest and on the back at bedtime to open her airways during the night.

Raise her head from shoulders to help breathing. Aerosoltherapy with saline or mixed saline with steroid solution for inhalation can also help.
Boost her immune system with healthy eating and additional vitamin D supplement.

Hope this helps.
