What causes severe sciatica pain post trauma?

My 73 year old mother fell off her horse a few months back and has since been diagnosed with sciatica due to the trauma of falling. She is seeing a chiropractor and has been to the PT but she has found no relief. Anything at home that she can do to help. She has a stair climber (bowflex trainer) but not sure if that would help or hurt her in the long run.

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have severe sciatica pain post trauma . Sciatica refers to pain that radiates along the path of the sciatic nerve, which branches from your lower back through your hips and buttocks and down each leg . Sciatica occurs when the sciatic nerve becomes pinched, usually by a herniated disk in your spine or by an overgrowth of bone on your vertebrae . I would suggest you to consult orthopedic surgeon for proper examination . Doctor may order X-ray , MRI , CT scan and electromyography . Doctor may prescribe anti-inflammatories , muscle relaxant , tricyclic antidepressants and anti-seizure medications along with percocet , gabapentin , muscle relaxant along with cortisone injection . Doctor may also recommend physical therapy and surgery in some severe cases. Doctor may also recommend physical therapy along with steroid injection and surgery .

Hope your concern has been resolved.
