What Causes Severe Pain In The Shoulder?

My father has extreme pain in his shoulder. He is 82. The doctor said it is strained muscles and it would take 4 or 5 days to reduce the pain. He is still in extreme pain after about 4 days. He has lost 60 lbs from 265-210 in the past year and he has aged 10 years in one year. His blood work comes back fine. I don t understand it. He has a pacemaker. He has one finger swollen and red with gout? I hope you might give me some insight.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
After going through your history, I would have to agree with the doctor. A muscle pull usually take 4-7 days to get better. Considering your father's age, it would take him some more time to heal the pulled muscle.
I would recommend some over the counter painkiller like Acetaminophen or Ibuprofen
Also apply some ice packs to reduce the pain.
I would also recommend a visit to an orthopedic surgeon and an Xray if symptoms don't improve even after 7 days.

Hope he feels better soon, thank you.
