What Causes Severe Pain In The Knees?

I ran a marathon about 2 years ago and began experiencing outer knee pain around mile 23. The exact spot of the pain was difficult to pinpoint, but that was the general area though I had never had knee pain or a knee injury before. After the marathon was done, it felt okay. The next time I tried to run, I was able to run around 1-2 miles before the pain started up again. This continued every time I tried to run, though the pain went away as soon as I stopped running. I went to an orthopedist last year who did some scans and ex-rays and eventually diagnosed it as IT Band Syndrome. I stopped running and I went through 12 weeks of physical therapy, but made no gains. Whenever I tried running again, the pain returned. I saw another orthopedist for a second opinion. He did an MRI and then later gave me a cortisone shot, but still nothing. I went running this morning and the pain was so bad around mile 2 that I had to stop. I have now been having pain in my lower leg all day, and there is a bump/swelling in a certain spot which is incredibly tender to the touch. I am questioning if it is my IT band or something else? The bump and tenderness are not really near my knee. They seem more like they are on top of the lower part of my leg (tibia?) on the lateral side, moving toward the back of my knee. I don t know anatomy well enough to google it. Any ideas?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

As per your history, it may be runner's knees. As you ran a marathon. Kindly do X-Ray of that knee joint after orthopedician consultation to rule out other possibilities. For pain, you can take tab. Diclofenac and tab. Serratiopeptidase after consultation. Apply Diclofenac gel or ointment. Do warm fomentation. Restrict activities. Take proper rest.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Shyam B. Kale,
