What Causes Severe Pain In The Knee After Receiving A Cortisone Shot?

My husband had a bad episode tonight after having a cortisone shot in his knee today. After going to bed he had such severe pain he could not move his leg from his thigh down through his foot. Shot was at 9am and episode at 9pm. At first study this may be a flare , but I am concerned about other interactions. I used WebMd to review the drug interactions with some of his other meds and this one came up as possibly significant (pasted search results below). Really don t know what this means since it not at all in layman s terms. Thank you. atorvastatin oral + cortisone intramuscular atorvastatin oral will increase the level or effect of cortisone intramuscular by affects how the drug is eliminated from the body (via what is known as the P-glycoprotein [MDR1] transporter)

Hello

It is very unlikely the pain your husband is experiencing is due to interaction of cortisone with Atrovastatine. Interactions generally happen with prolonged use of both medications at the same time and it does not cause pain as it is the case of your husband. The first 24 hours of cortisone injection in the knee joint some patients may experience worsening of the symptoms and bad pains. It is not a very common finding but may happen and generally it is nothing to worry as in 1-2 days it gets better on its own. If the knee is swollen or red then it is important for your husband to see the doctor to make sure there is no complication from the injection. If there is no swelling or redness than I advise him to just take some ibuprofen, try to rest the knee for 1-2 days and elevate it, local cold compresses might help as well and see the doctor if no better or any worsening in 1-2 days.

Hope I have answered your query.
