What Causes Severe Pain In The Chest Of A Child?

My (almost) 10 year old daughter is experiencing chest pain she is describing as a stabbing pain in her heart. Her heart rate is elevated slightly, but I know that being a child that is normal. However, she is having a double beat on the second beat. It almost seems like it could be PVC. (I ve got a multitude of heart issues myself so unfortunately know way more than any 34 year old woman should know.) Which is why I m concerned. She s saying she s having a hard time breathing and it hurts and she can t take a deep breath. She said she feels like everything is spinning. Her heart rate is currently approximately 135, and she is laying down. She s hydrated and hasn t been doing anything strenuous at all today. Also when checking her eyes, her right eye dilated normally, but her left seemed to be constricting, not entirely but noticeable. She has been complaining of left shoulder pain for a couple of days. Being as I have a large history of heart issues myself, and she s my daughter, of course my first reaction is to panic. Which I did for about the first minute or so and then decided that due to my history and bias as her mother that I would be better off trying to get an opinion from someone outside the box. i wouldn t want to put her through an entire cardiac workup in the ER for a case of pleurisy. I would greatly appreciate any advice. Do I take her to the ER now, or see if it goes away in a little bit? How long should I wait before the symptoms subside to declare it an emergency? Thank you!

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

You should not wait to take her to ER. Because she is having a valvular problem, which is causing such symptoms. Kindly do ECG and 2D echo and it would be enough to diagnose the condition. Do it as soon as possible.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
