What Causes Severe Pain In Knee Post Trauma?

my son had a fall 1 week ago while snowboarding and has been having a difficulty time walking since then c/o right knee pain - ( behind knee) and denies any swelling -- he is at college -- so Im extracting information from him by phone we see ortho dr on Monday-- now taking ibuprofen QID and ice PRN what could possibly be wrong ? fx or what other diagnosis could it be

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have severe pain in knee post trauma . Well the symptoms you mention in query can occur due to may reasons like anterior cruciate ligament injury ,torn meniscus , knee bursitis , sciatica , DVT and rheumatoid arthritis . But in your case the symptoms are due to trauma. I would suggest you to consult orthopedic surgeon for proper diagnosis . Doctor may order X-ray , CT scans or MRI . Doctor may recommend muscle strengthening exercises along with injection of a corticosteroid drug , orthodox MR and surgery like arthroscopic surgery in severe damage . For now apply warm compresses to knee and calf muscle , take proper rest , take ibuprofen or acetaminophen for pain and elevate your legs while lying down . Doctor may also recommend physical therapy . Doctor may also recommend surgery in case of severe damage .
