What Causes Severe Pain And Breathless After A Liver Biopsy?

I had a liver biopsy at 10:00am on 2/24, went to the ER on 2/25 due to a fever, chills, and the worst pain I have ever experienced. The ER performed ultras sound, x-rays, CT, blood work, and a physical exam and all came back negative and no bleeding. Its 2/27 and I am in sever pain and still can t breathe normally. The ER discharge notes said go see my doctor and my doctor is saying go to the ER for pain management. What is causing this pain? Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

The cause of pain can be multifactorial as liver swelling, diaphragm irritation, collection involving lower lobe of right lung, anxiety or others.

The significant amount of pain after the liver biopsy to the extent of breathlessness must be addressed in a sound manner.

In my clinic, I admit the patient for observation, intravenous therapy with morphine or another analgesic as tramadol hydrochloride as the pain control should be the primary focus in this instance, rather than going through the series of evaluations.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Purva Patel,
