What Causes Severe Leg Pain While Having GOUT Disease?

My husband has a gout attack right now. Started at the big toe then in the middle part of the feet, when one part is about to get better another part will start to ache. Right now two parts are getting better bit another two started to ache. This started 9 days ago. What is the best thing to do right now? Thanks

Hi,
Your husband is having gouty arthritis. Acute painful conditions are managed by non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like indomethacin.
Indomethacin is usually prescribed at 50 mg every 8 hours oral intake for a maximum of 5 days. You may also be prescribed pantoprazole 40 mg oral once daily before food to prevent development of gastritis as indomethacin can increase gastritis risk.
Once the acute attack subsides, your physician may look at the serum uric acid levels and decide on chronic prophylaxis treatment based on number of attacks and serum uric acid levels.
I would suggest you to consult your physician as gout is a chronic condition and it needs regular follow-up and medications to control acute flare ups.
