What Causes Severe Itching On The Tip Of The Big Toe?

I have been having severe itching in my big toe tip and the next toe along with the side of my heel on my left foot. There is no rash, discoloration, peeling or anything that would indicate fungus or a skin condition. The itch is so intense that no matter how much I scratch, it s still there! Help!

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

I understand your concern. The itching you are describing sounds like contact dermatitis, which is basically a skin irritation, usually due to washing detergent. The big toe area is most tightly in contact with the sock and therefore it itches the most. I suggest you put your feet in a bowl of warm water for 10 minutes, then dry them with a towel and rub some moisturizing cream on the itchy area. Do not put socks on for some time. Switching to a milder type of detergent would be the sensible thing to do.

All the best.
