What Causes Severe Headache While On Ambien?

My granddaughter (22) was hospitalized last week for UTI and sepsis, and intractable headache. They put her on ambien and she feels like she can t hold her head up after a good night s sleep. She is also on propranolol for headache and antibiotics. Is the headache due to the infection or is the feeling of not being able to hold up her head due to medication?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Propanolol is used to reduce the number of migraines a person may experience. It is a prophylactic medication- medication used beforehand to prevent something from happening.

Urinary tract infections do not normally cause headaches so this is an unlikely cause.

The feeling of not being able to hold her head up may be due to weakness and excess drowsiness which is a side effect of any sleep aid.
If it is making her too drowsy, she may need to consider discontinuing it and using an alternative

I hope this helps
