What Causes Severe Gastritis And Foot Cramps After Taking Protonix?

I am taking Protonix and having extreme gas and very loose bowels. Moreover, I have had toe and foot cramps once I began taking the PPI. MY dr asked me to take Protonix for six months as I have an irritated stomach. I have been taken it it for four months.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Nausea, vomiting, mild diarrhea, gas and stomach pain are common side effects of Pantoprazole. If you have been started on the same for an acid related gastritis, it is enough to take the same for 6 weeks and not 6 months. You can discontinue the medication now. Remember to avoid the common causes of gastritis like ' curry, worry and hurry'. Avoid pain killers and also check for the bacteria H.Pylori which causes gastritis, duodenitis and peptic ulcers. If found to have the same, appropriate triple regime is required to eradicate the same.

Do get back to me if you have further queries.
