What Causes Severe Cramps In Feet And Shin Post Cortisone Injection?
I had two cortisone injections, one in each knee. It has been nearly a month since the last one. At night I get severe cramping in my feet, shins, and ankles. I have never cramped like this before. I do not take any meds. I am allergic to NSAIDS so I just deal with the knee pain. I have never taken pain medication. My point is, it has to be the cortisone shots. I started taking magnesium, calcium and pottasium. I drink a lot of water, an occasional gatorade, and very little soda. Pickle juice relieves the cramps within a few seconds but I m drinking it two times a night. My doctor prescribed Requip. Last night was my first dose and I feel awful today. Please help!!

As per my clinical experience, the cramps in feet and shin after a period of cortisone shot taken before 1 month do not co relate with the effects of shot. It is the primary pathology in terms of osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis which has shown up with the severe pain. As the effect of cortisone shot wares off over a period of time, underlying inflammation show up with release of interleukins and other inflammatory mediators.
Kindly consult your ortho specialist for the further guidelines. Till that time, kindly follow basic guidance as:
- Local application of heating pad
- Use diclofenac, linseed oil or capsaicin cream or gel based spray for instant relief
- Analgesic with anti inflammatory as diclofenac, ibuprofen, etoricoxib or others after meals if no history of drug sensitivity
- Control of blood sugar
- Control of body weight if obese or BMI above 25 Kg/m2
