What Causes Severe Cramps In Both Legs?

Was at our favorite restaurant tonight with our best friends, had wine with dinner as usual, but at the end of our dinner, had severe cramps in both legs, didn t even know if I could stand up. My husband massaged my right leg right there, then did stand up and could walk and now am not experiencing any discomfort????? I do take potassium pills daily, drink lots of water, what next?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Cramps in the legs are caused due to accumulation of lactic acid. It can also be caused due to electrolyte disturbances - particularly calcium and potassium.
So taking only potassium would not cure your illness and excess potassium is not good for your heart.
Better to take calcium supplementation, drink milk and replenish electrolytes by consuming tender coconut or WHO recommended oral rehydration solution (ORS).
