What Causes Severe Cough And Pain In The Chest?

I have had a nusance cough for over a year and seems to be getting worse. Most of the time it is a dry cough. I get a coughing spell so bad, I feel like I am going to vomit. Occasionally my chest hurts from coughing. Water does not seem to help the cough. I am not feeling sick otherwise, no fever. The coughing started out just in the evening, but now comes any time of the day.
