What Causes Severe Constipation In An Elderly Person?

Hello and thank you for your assistance. My father who is 88 is experiencing a good deal of constipation. He is currently on a strong stool softener, drinking plenty of water, prune juice and eating fresh fruit such as peaches, cantaloupe and apples. Yet he still has issues with elimination. His doctor has told him to cut out both coffee and tea, believing that they might be depleting his water intake. Do you have any suggestions or do you need more info from me to complete the case? Thank you.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Let him increase fibers in diet (salads, vegetables) let him avoid fruit juice. Eating grated whole fruit would be ideal. Drinking about 10 glasses of water. Doing abdominal muscle exercises / walking etc., will help. As for home care, he can have clear cow butter, one spoon to be taken with hot water at bed time.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
