What Causes Severe Anxiety While Suffering From Hypertension?

My 22 year old daughters BP has been 140/99 the past 2 nights. And in the past year on a few occasions it was really high but seem to come down with in a day. She has very high anxiety and went through a break up yesterday. In the past a doctor gave propanaol for anxiety, which she never took but i advised her to take 10 mg last night this morning before she got out of bed was 104/89. What does this mean? I feel that her high BP is not all anxiety related, am i right? Does she need to be on meds daily?

Hello,

Thank you for your query. I understand your concerns.

Yes, you are right in feeling concerned about your daughter’s raised BP.

Anxiety can caused raised BP, but we should not attribute her raised BP only to anxiety especially in a young woman. Is your daughter on any hormonal contraception- combined hormonal contraception can cause raised BP.

The only way to diagnose if her BP is anxiety related or pathological is by her having a 24 hour-72 hour BP monitor fitted. It will record her BP every hour whether she is awake or asleep. If the recording shows BP is high, then her doctor will decide on next course of treatment. She may also need some blood tests to rule out other causes of raised BP – kidney causes, adrenal causes etc. She may also be required to undergo an ultrasound scan to check her kidneys, adrenals etc.

If all the above tests are negative, then her BP is very likely to be anxiety related.

Propranolol helps with anxiety. But it also causes a slowing of heart rate and lowering of BP. So when she went through her break-up she could have been very stressed, causing her to have raised BP. Propranolol in addition to calming her down, also acted on her BP and brought it low.

Some people are more anxiety prone. They are called Type-A personality people. Cognitive behavioural therapy which is a type of psycotherapy will help them. Anti-anxiety medication will help them.

High blood pressure will not cause anxiety, at least at the levels that you mentioned above. But anxiety can cause raised BP.

I hope this answer has helped you.
