What Causes Separation Of Finger Nail From Finger?

Hi there! My fingernail is becoming separated from my finger. The skin under my nail is growing hard and at times grows longer than my nail. I have done a scrape and it was negative for fungus. I have also seen a dermotologist who says the only solution is to keep my nail short What is my problem? Please advise

Hello,

Onycholysis, is a condition that cause the fingernails become loose and separate from the nail bed. Sometimes detached nails are associated with injury or infection. In other cases nail separation is a reaction to a particular drug or consumer product, such as nail hardeners or adhesives. Nail cosmetics and aggressive manicure can be other possible cause of onycholisis.

Nail lifting may also occur with underlying medical problems, including thyroid disease , iron deficiency ,psoriasis or pregnancy. I suggest to consult physically your local physician because it is necessary to do some tests to check for other medical conditions (apart nail fungus) that can explain your condition.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
