What Causes Sensitivity In The Nipple?

I am 53 yrs old black male. For the past couple of weeks I ve notice that my left nipple is very sensitive to the touch. Not so much when I m wearing a shirt, but if I touch it to check. Also, it feels little hard under and around it to me. What do you think it could be and should I go to the doctor? I have not had any injury to my chest that could have caused this.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi
Thanks for posting on HCM
That sounds like a breast infection. The hardness you feel under your breast is surely an inflammatory reaction.Other causes of hardness in breast like breast masses are less common but may occur.I will however suggest you take a pain/antiinflammatory drug like ibuprofen and see the Doctor for examination if no improvement.
Hope my answer will help you
Best regards
