Hello,

Right sided ankle swelling and pain radiating from from knee to ankle may be due to sprain-strain, nerve compression, sciatica, arthritis, osteoarthritis, etc. All these symptoms can be triggered by carpal tunnel syndrome. Since you have ankle swelling you are suggested to take low salt and low carb diet to reduce water retention.

Swelling can also be due to injury, trauma, OA, RA, etc. You are suggested to get clinically examined by a GP, get blood and urinalysis tests done to confirm OA, RA and X-ray, MRI, CT to detect any ligament / tendon, nerve issues, fractures, trauma, etc. Tinel's test and electromyography can be done to detect carpal tunnel syndrome, you will be treated accordingly. To get rid of pain and inflammation you can take NSAIDS, Naproxen, one SOS when required. Give rest to your foot, do not strain unnecessarily. Apply ice compression for relieve. Keep your foot elevated on a stool while sitting or on a pillow when on bed.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
