What Causes Restricted Mobility And Swelling In The Hand Of An Elderly Person?

I just returned from visiting my 96 year old mother. She has arthritis and has lived with lupus most of her life. Her right hand is mobile- but her left hand is closed shut and fingers are swollen. She resides in a nursing home- to my knowledge, she is not getting any theraphy. What do you think is happening with her hand?. The staff puts a warm compress on at times- and put some kind of soft splint on while I was there recently. Thank you.

This probably is age related bone and joint problem. Calcium content decreases as the age progresses , hence bones become weak. Also joint are not as smooth as they used to before. Joint surfaces becomes rough and that causes restriction of movement , and also causes pain .
