What Causes Reduction In Weight On Switching From Insulin To Metformin And Amaryl?
I was having lows on lantus and novolog so my dr put me back on metformin (1000 x 2 day) and amaryl 4 mg daily. My a1c is 6.9 but my problem is weight loss. I have lost about a pound per month since stopping insulin and am now down to 150 at almost 6 ft tall. Should I go back on insulin?
As per my clinical experience, primary weight loss is of concern and most welcome for a diabetic patient when BMI is particularly above 30. It is the ongoing weight changes over period of months which matters before deciding the change of therapy. It means, if now onwards you are maintaining your current weight of 150 pounds over a period of the next couple of months, you are going well with Metformin.
If you are losing weight on persistent basis, consult your diabetologist for further guidelines of care before deciding by self to start the Insulin again.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
