What Causes Redness And Swelling On The Wrist After Doing Chest Exercise?

I was doing chest compressions today as part of my CPR training and they had us do them in sets of 15 minutes each, 4 times.I think I put a ton of pressure on my hand as well as the mannequin because I noticed redness and swelling on my wrist as soon as I had finished. It s been about 4 hours since and I ve developed large purple bruises on the back of my hand as well as the heel of my hand. My hand also hurts with movement, and even the slightest touch. I don t know if I d actually injured it, or it s just normal bruising

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

The person giving CPR mostly end up with wrist pain, bruise, swelling, and musculoskeletal injury.
The whole body force always lies on the heel of the hand and force given at the rate of 100 compressions per minute. The injury is like a man fall on the extended hand at thenar eminence.

The pain you are having is because of soft tissue injury at the wrist. Theory and literature say it is because of injury to scapholunate ligament. If you do not give rest at this moment with supportive care, you may end up with further complications like protrusion of capitate bone to scapholunate ligament space which is on extreme, untreated, and rare.

So, you can start with anti-inflammatory with analgesic combination with ice packs to the joint and keep hand elevated when sleeping and meet an orthopedician, if needed, for further evaluation.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Anuradha Das
