What Causes Redness And Swelling On The Face While On Synthroid And Coumadin?

My mother, who has renal failure, is also on synthroid for thyroid issues and also takes Coumadin to prevent blood clots, age 76, is having facial swelling and slight redness in cheeks and forehead. No pain, itching or swollen glands. Anything to be concerned about?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello

The redness on her cheek and forehead could be related to erysipelas (bacterial skin infection).

However, as she is on Coumadin and Synthroid, we should consider blood changes together with hormonal and blood pressure changes.

Do monitor her blood pressure and sugar levels, and record the results for reference. I think you should get her checked by a dermatologist.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
