What Causes Reddish Jelly Like Vaginal Discharge Post Discontinuing Birth Control Pills?

I stopped taking birth control pills on August 26. Over the last 6 weeks, I have experienced clear and sometimes red or brown streaked jelly-like discharge a few days after I think I ovulate (26 day cycles). I have not taken any ovulation tests because I m not trying to conceive at the moment (I am sexually active). My last period was Sept. 15-18, and my next is supposed to start Oct. 11. The mucus color varies, sometimes clear, clear with brown or red streaks, bright red or very dark red. I do get more normal discharge through out the cycle, but this jelly discharge is not always wet, usually more sticky. It is not abundant, less than a teaspoon. No pain or itching. Is this normal?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi.

The jelly like discharge is most probably some amount of mucous and blood, occurring as a side effect of discontinuing the birth control. In majority of cases, it discontinues in its own, but if it does not within about 2 weeks or so then report to a doctor.

Best wishes.
