What Causes Red, Swollen And Raised Bump On The Back Of Knee?
Hi. My 2 year old has a huge red bump on the back of her knee. Two days ago it was swollen and raised up with a white head. We cleaned it with alcohol and drained the pus, which took quite awhile. The area has oozed a little and is still red, but the pain does not seem to be spreading. We are keeping it covered with newsprint and a bandaid. Could this have been a fire ant bite or mosquito bite that she scratched raw and got infected? Do she need to go to a doctor?
The description appears to be that of a boil, that is an infection of a hair follicle. The reasons could an insect bite and scratch leading to infection. If the pus is drained of and wound starts healing then no need to go to a doctor.
But it is possible pus will be again seen as it takes a few days for such wounds to heal completely.
The child may need a course of suitable antibiotic like Augmentin dry syrup for about 5 to 6 days, for which you may have to visit the doctor. Cleaning and dressing is needed for a few days.
Hope I have answered your queries. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
Regards,
Dr. Prabhakar Laxman Jathar
