What Causes Recurring Shivers While Sleeping?

I ve been having shakes during the night since about 2 months. These are not regular; I ve only experienced these about 5 or 6 times, but it seems to be getting more common (they didn t occur for about a month after the first time, but now they have happened two nights in a row twice - once last week and now these past two nights). These shakes wake me up at about 5 or 6am, start in my legs and continue to spread throughout my whole body. I feel fine mentally while they occur, not stressed or scared, and they usually last about 10-30 minutes, although the first time I had these they lasted about 1.5 hours.

Hello,

I would explain that your symptoms seem to be related to an electrolyte imbalance or a sleep disorder. I would exclude seizures because of the duration of these symptoms. So, I would recommend consulting with your general physician or a physical exam and some tests:
- Complete blood count for anemia
- Blood electrolytes
- Vitamin D levels for possible deficiency
- A multi sleep latency test.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Aida Quka
