What Causes Recurring Productive Cough Post Open Heart Surgery?

Hello. My father had a four way bypass / open heart surgery four weeks ago and the coughing and phlegm had all but cleared up and then it comes back. I have been giving him a 1200mg Musinex along with Robitussin for cough + congestion DM. My question is : What else can be used to alleviate this problem..?? My father is 73yrs old.

in this age the lung capacity is decreased so more chance oh breatlessness, lung infection, chronic cough is common,,,,, don't take too much medication without any symptoms like fever/ chest pain / breathing problems etc,,, there is no problem if productive cough is there without fever or other symptoms,,,,ur medicines may increase the cough production so don't use it without prescription,,,,,
