What Causes Recurring Pain In The Chest?

For years, my brother has been washing his tea-stained porcelain mugs with full-strength Clorox bleach. Recently he has been experiencing intermittent chest pain at rest that lasts 5-20 minutes; occasionally longer and spontaneously resolve. He s been having 2 or 3 episodes a day, 3-4 days a week. Multiple cardiac tests (EKGs, Echo, continuous cardiac monitoring) have failed to show any heart abnormality. Could his symptoms be from chronic chlorine poisoning? Is there a way to test for this?

Hi,

The symptoms of Clorox poisoning are generally on the local mucosal tissues like eyes, mouth as well as skin. These signs are in the form of feeling of burning, irritation and in more severe cases, like blisters etc. in eyes & mouth. If the concentration of Clorox solution is more, it can give rise to scalds or blisters on skin also.

However, there seems no such type of poisoning with Clorox, which may cause such type of symptoms, as described by you, particularly with a diluted concentration of Clorox left over on mugs and ingested in the body with drinking or eating in these mugs.

The symptoms you are describing, may be muscle pain or postural pain. However, any cardiac illness is also to be ruled out. You have already got your various tests done for this. Still, in my opinion, stress test is also indicated in this case to confirm / rule out any angina related symptoms and CAG may be required, if indicated by results of stress test.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
