What Causes Recurring Migraine On The Left Side Of Head?

I have a history of migraines and I am 39 years old. I recently started having an increase in migraines, lasting several days at a time and getting minimal relief from my usual medicine, Maxalt. It is always on my left side now and it hurts to put pressure on one point in the inner part of my eyebrow. Most of the pain stems from that area but it is also the rest of that side of my head. I am on day four of one now, although I had 12 hours of minimal relief during that time. Any reason this could be?

Hello thanks for asking from HCM for your health related queries

I can understand your concern. You have persistent migraine and is not responding to pain medicines. Maxalt is Rizatriptan and the drug helps to reduce the episodes of severe migraine in most of individuals. As the drug is an ergot derivative so the drug has high risk of developing tolerance if used regularly. The drug can help to reduce the pain but is not a definitive treatment of migraine. For proper relief of symptoms I'd advise you to visit a neuropsychiatrist for treatment.

Medicines like Amitriptyline, Nortriptyline, Sodium Valproate, Topiramate etc are used commonly for treatment. These medicines when taken on regular basis help to reduce the episodes of migraine. Medicines like Propranolol or Atenolol helps to reduce the frequency of episodes and thus provide prophylaxis. For very severe pain Sumatriptan can help. Consult your psychiatrist for detailed treatment of migraine.

Apart from this as the pain is persistent then I'd advise you to keep precautions for headache. Avoid moving out in sun lights or use sunglasses. Sunlight is a trigger for severe headache. Avoid tea, coffee or carbonated drinks for some days. Have good sleep for at least 7-8 hours a day. All these things will help in early recovery.

Thanks, Hope this helps you. Take care
