Hi,

Noted your short and specific query/history about your 86 year old husband having recurrent diarrhea and you overheard something on radio with three initials.
The thing which you heard on radio is most probably IBS that is irritable bowel syndrome. This is a condition wherein there is no specific cause found on investigations which are as follows:
Tests of stool for three days.
Tests of blood particularly for thyroid functions and all as per the clinical presentation that your Doctor will decide.
CT can of abdomen.
Colonoscopy.
If a particular disease is found on investigations he will be treated accordingly.
If all the investigations are normal then this may be due to the condition IBS wherein there is stress or anxiety that affect the intestinal system to cause diarrhea.
Surely it is important to find if any specific foods or beverages is causing the symptoms and stopped if found.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant,
