What Causes Recurrent Vaginal Thrush?

For the last 6 months I have struggled with recurrent vaginal thrush. I am on long term treatment however recently I have noticed what looks like a paper cut near my vagina opening. The discomfort is different to what I normally experience with thrush. It s more like a sting. This feeling disappeared when I got my period and has returned 4 days after finishing my period. Is this just another symptom of thrush? Or could it be something else?
