What Causes Rash On Scalp And Hands While Taking Esbriet For Pulmonary Fibrosis?

I am taking a newly approved drug for pulmonary fibrosis - Esbriet prescribed through doctor at Mayo Clinic in Minneapolis. One side effect is photo-sensitivity. I started the drug in Jan. 2015 with no problems until recently when we had a heat wave here in North Alabama. I cover up with hat etc. to work in yard in late afternoon. Now, I have a rash on scalp, forehead, neck, arms and even some spots on hands. I am having to wear a hat just to go to car and go to work or do errands. A local doctor prescribed Hydrocortisone Valerate 0.2% cream. It is taking a long time to go away. Any suggestions? Will I ever be able to go out in the sun again without long pants and sleeves and hat?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello, welcome to HCM. It is due to photosensitivity. Try to avoid going in sun when you are taking Esbriet. The hydrocortisone just supress the reaction that takes place. So i sugest better you change the drug for pulmonary fibrosis for permanent solution.Take care
