What Causes Rapid Heartbeats Even Without Strenuous Exercise?

My 14 year old daughter plays soccer. She has had a few episodes of very rapid heart beat at various times with or without strenuous exercise. It comes on without warning. She is a goalkeeper so not running the field. What kinds of tests should be done to figure out the cause or what should I do?

I read your question carefully and I understand your concern.

Heart arrhythmia is an issue which should be carefully considered. There can be congenital malformations which may lead to abnormal electrical discharges. For that initially an EKG and heart ultrasound are the most appropriate initial exams. A 24 hour Holter EKG may be necessary after (24h monitoring of heart rhythm).

Other possible causes may be high thyroid function or endocrine disorders leading to release of chatecolamines in the blood such as pheochromocytoma.

I hope to have been of help.
