What Causes Radiating Bruise Mark From Arm Pit To Chest Without Injury?

My mom works for a group home dealing with handicapped adults....recently one of her clients got a strange bruise on his upper right chest that started as a pink mark under the arm near the armpit on the arm and the chest area, It progressed to a very large bruise within 24 hours. The bruise spanned from under the arm up to his collar bone and across to the center of the chest and down to the nipple. He was taken to ER where they diagnosed him as suffering a blunt force trauma, however none of the staff or other patients in the home are responsible for such an injury. This patient is a brain injury patient who has been diagnosed with hardening of the lungs. Could this be something other than what the ER has suggested?
