What Causes Purple Gums When Suffering From High Fever?

My 7year old daughter has been having a high fever for the last three days and today I noticed that her gums are purple. She also has been complaining of a headache and had diahrrea the first day. Is this something I should take her to the E.R For? Or let it run its course?
